Privacy policy

Short version: your files never reach us. Below is everything we do collect, in plain language.

Last updated

1. Your files

Files you compress are processed entirely in your browser. They are not uploaded to, stored on, or accessible to DigiCompress or our hosting providers. We never receive file names, file contents, or hashes of contents. The same applies to background removal and the privacy scrub: the AI model and the metadata tools are downloaded to your browser and run there, and we never receive the hidden data (such as GPS coordinates or author names) found in your files. After you download or discard a result, the page releases the data from its memory.

2. What we collect

We collect the minimum needed to run a free service fairly and to improve it:

  • Anonymous visitor ID — a random identifier created in your browser and kept in local storage (not a cookie), plus a per-tab session ID.
  • Usage events — page views, time on page, referrer and campaign tags in the URL, and for each compression: the tool used (compress, background removal or privacy scrub), file category, detected format, size before and after, compression level, processing time, outcome, whether the result was downloaded and purged, and simple counts such as how many hidden fields were removed or how many files an archive contained — never the values themselves.
  • Network-derived data — approximate country and city determined from your IP address by our hosting provider’s edge network, and a salted, one-way hash of your IP used only to prevent abuse of the free limit. We do not store your raw IP address.
  • Device information — device type (mobile, tablet, desktop), browser and operating system family.
  • Account data, only if you sign in — your email address, sign-in method (Google or email link), account creation date, and your compression totals.

3. Cookies and tracking

We do not use advertising or tracking cookies, and we do not use third-party analytics or ad networks. If you sign in, our authentication provider stores a session token in your browser so you stay signed in; it is used for nothing else.

4. How we use it

  • To enforce the free daily limit of 3 compressions for visitors without an account.
  • To keep the service secure and prevent automated abuse.
  • To understand, in aggregate, which tools and file types are used and how well compression performs.
  • To provide unlimited use and support if you have an account.

5. Legal basis

We process this data on the basis of our legitimate interest in operating a secure, fair and improving service, and — for account data — to provide the service you asked for. We do not sell personal data, and we do not use it for advertising or profiling.

6. Who processes data for us

We use a small number of infrastructure providers: a hosting and edge network provider that serves the website and functions, and a database and authentication provider that stores analytics records and accounts. They process data on our instructions only. Data may be stored outside your country; where it is, we rely on the safeguards those providers offer for international transfers.

7. How long we keep it

Anonymous usage records are kept for up to 24 months and then deleted or aggregated. Abuse-prevention hashes are only meaningful for a short window and are rotated. Account data is kept until you delete your account; ask us and we will delete it along with the compression history linked to it.

8. Your rights

Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (NDPA), the GDPR and similar laws, you have the right to:

  • Ask what personal data we hold about you and get a copy.
  • Correct inaccurate data.
  • Ask us to delete your data, including your account.
  • Object to or ask us to restrict processing.
  • Receive your account data in a portable format.
  • Withdraw consent where processing relies on it, and complain to a data protection authority such as the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) or your local regulator.

Clearing your browser’s site data removes your anonymous visitor ID immediately. For anything else, email us at the address below; we respond within 30 days.

9. Children

DigiCompress is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly create accounts for them.

10. Changes and contact

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page, and for significant changes we will say so on the site. Questions or requests: email privacy@digicompress.com. See also how DigiCompress works and our terms of use.
